We have a good group, about 18, planning to attend tonight. Please
arrive at 6 if you can so we can start (a few people have to arrive a
bit later). Here is the idea and the plan.

We hope for this to be the first of what will become a fairly regular
"business and beer education" type of meeting. We are very thankful to
Paul for letting us have it at the Black Sparrow this time and we
promise to behave ourselves and still not be too boring.

We who have it will bring a little homebrew and *will not* start opening
it up right away and passing bottles around. All beer will go into
labeled pitchers and we can have five or six of them going at a time; I
gotta see how many pitchers we have. Paul said they have some too at
the BS.

AGENDA, roughly

Ongoing -- The "Pitcher People," Nancy, Lloyd, and/or Victor will, in
some more or less organized fashion, pour your beer into a pitcher, or
give you the pitcher to pour it into, and make sure that you have a
label and indelible marker.

At 6:15 or 6:30 we will begin a short presentation and tasting of
Morland's "Old Speckled Hen," which is regarded as a classic commercial
example of the style called "8C" also known as "English Pale Ale" also
called "ESB." by the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). My
intention is that the cost of the samples of Old Speckled Hen will be
borne by the club, although I haven't cleared it with the other board
members yet. There will be handouts of the BJCP style guidelines for
attendees.

At 7-ish might be the right time to have a break and if people want to
order food then this might be the time.

If it is necessary to order food or drink during a presentation, please
do this in a way that is quiet and doesn't interfere with others'
ability to hear the speaker or the discussion that might accompany the talk.

At 7:15 or 7:30 I'm hoping that Nancy and/or Lloyd.will tell about our
experiences at the Cincinnati National Homebrewers' Conference and the
THC table at "Club Night."

Probably around 8:00 we will have a short round of "NAME THIS BEER." An
un-identified (but fairly well known and commercially available) beer
will be poured around, and adventurous and/or knowledgeable folks will
answer:
1 -- is it an ale or a lager?
2 -- what is the general category? (porter? bock? wheat beer?....)
3 -- what is the specific category? (Southern English Brown? Russian
Imperial Stout?....)
4 -- what is this beer exactly? (Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter?
Negra Modelo? Kalamazoo Stout?)

And THEN..... we'll have some mead tasting.

At least I hope it all works out a bit like this.

See you soon.

PS -- Important note -- at the suggestion of some members I changed the
replies feature of the list so that all replies go by default to the
person who wrote the message to which you're replying. If you mean to
send your reply to the entire list, you must remember to put the list
address in. thc at lafinlarry.net (And people keep asking me who is this
Laughin' Larry guy anyway?)
